What is the difference between Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis is considered a condition of “wear and tear” upon the joints; caused by numerous factors including age and injury. On the other hand, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is not a condition of “wear and tear.” It is classified as an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation that damages the joints.

For the majority of sufferers, time-consuming diagnostic tests and other complex procedures will not be needed. Diagnosis will likely be made by a simple, weight-bearing x-ray, as well as a thorough examination by a skilled orthopedic doctor. X-rays of osteoarthritis patients often show bone enlargement and narrowing of the affected joint space, as well as any damaged cartilage or bone spurs. Occasionally, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be used to examine the extent of cartilage damage, especially if the OA is thought to be in the spinal region.
